New Adventure Kayak Magazine

Got a shot published in the Photo Annual this fall. Psyched. Thanks to Tim Shuff for including it in his selection! Got up early one am on a trip to Clarke Island in the Broken Islands and got this sunrise shot. Clouds were rolling in preceeding a rain storm so I darkened them up with a Cokin Graduated Neutral Density Filter. Shot with the Nikon D300, 12-24 Nikon lens and Gitzo Mountaineer with off centre ball head.

The Broken Islands are amazing. Really fun and safe place to go. We went in with my 2 year old daughter this fall. For more info. on this place check out this link here.

Zoom - BC Bike Race Stage 6 in Squamish

Zoom, originally uploaded by John Irvine.

Whipped up to Squamish to get some shots of the BC Bike Race. Got into the burms at the bottom of Pseudo Pseuga. and set up two lights. One immediately left of the riders up close and on a tripod, and one down hlill and right of the riders on the ground on a gorilla pod. Panned the shots at a slow shuttler speed to get the blurring and had the flashes set to rear cutain so I could freeze the rider and get good detail of them as they passed. Details below.

Yaletown Grand Prix 2009

Had the pleasure of going to the Yaletown Grand Prix and shooting the pros. n this shot I set up a Nikon sb900 to the right of the rider, on a gorilla pod, attacehd to the race fencing. It was at dround level. Sat on the ground at the back of this corner and shot as the racers came by. Details below.

Was a great race to watch. In the mens Race, long time Whistler local Will Routely left the group and lapped the field with about 3 laps to go. In the womens race, Alison Testorete dominated from within the pack, jumping during the primes and at the sprint to easily win the race. Its one of my favorite races to watch given the tricky corners and little climbs.

BC Bike Race comes to the North Shore

Made my way up to Severed D. on Mount Seymour to shoot the 1st Stage of the BC Bike RAce. Got to a marshy spot and set up the lights. For this shot I used 2 Nikon SB800s (both set at 0EV) 1 camera left low on a tree, one camera right up high on a tree, attached them using using manfrotto superclamps. Set up an SB 900 (set at -1EV) on my tripod behind the tree on the right side of the frame. All these were triggered remotely with a nikon commander unit. Exposed the shot at -0.5 EV. Used a 50mm lens, f1.8 at 1/125.

Squamish Rock Star

Up in Squamish this past weekend. Test of Metal Weekend. Rode the race on Saturday and burned 1500 calories at least. Went to the Squamish Rock Star to get some photos on Sunday. Was a bit late, so I stopped at the first burm I found and snapped a few shots of the races at the bottom of the course. Speedy. Used my 80-200 f2.8 and set up a single SB-900 camera left of the riders. Got some fun shots. Click on the pic above and that will take you to my Flikr account where you can view more. Hope you like them.

Callaghan Country and St. Anton Ski Touring

This winter I was lucky enough to be a part of two Research and Development Camps we did at ARC'TERYX Equipment. We organize these camps and I get to attend, run and photograph. We invite our key dealers from all over the world to spend time with us learning about our company and products, and we learn aout their buinsesses. The first Camp was done in St. Anton, Austria. And the second, here in our backyard, at Callaghan Country, near Whistler B.C. Note, that most of the images from the Callaghan Dealer Camp were taken by my colleague Angela Percival, a very talented photographer and graphic designer.

Enjoy!

Stairmaster

Oh jeez. My bud Derek Thomas and I climbed up a tall couloir off the Spearhead Glacier yesterday. Its called Stairmaster...appropriate. Got high...up on Phalanx Peak. Then did this dreamy descent back to the bottom of the Spearhead Glacier. Shots taken with my Lumix LX2. 16:9 format. Sure like this camera.
